International Ministries
Ignatius and his companions decided to form a single apostolic body to be placed at the disposal of the vicar of Christ for universal mission. This has meant, throughout our history, that Jesuits are ready to go wherever in the world their service is most needed; availability is to be an attitude of the individual Jesuit and a characteristic of the whole society: mobile, agile, responding to the needs of a fast-changing world.
--GC 34, Decree 21: Interprovincial and Supraprovincial Cooperation, #1
Jesuits of the Oregon Province are currently engaged in numerous apostolic works of the international Society of Jesus. Oregon Jesuits assist Father General in the Roman Curia in areas of leadership of the Society. They are professors in Africa and Rome. We work with the poorest of the poor in refugee camps, and teach and train younger Jesuits in formation. In addition to individual members of the Province being missioned overseas, both Universities in the Oregon Province have outreach programs with other Jesuit universities: Seattle University in Nicaragua; and Gonzaga University in Colombia. The Province has a long history with the Province of Zambia and has just recently entered into a twinning agreement with the Province of Colombia: sharing manpower and resources to advance new models of social, economic, and environmental sustainability.
Oregon Jesuits in formation have spent summers working in various international apostolates. Jesuits in formation have worked in L’Arche communities in the south of France and Montreal, Canada; dug wells and water systems rural areas of Africa; taught English in Poland; studied the heavens at the Vatican Observatory; helped lepers in India; and made retreats in a Tibetan monastery. Members of the Oregon Province recognize the universal scope of our Catholic faith and the need to be persons for others throughout the world. As we continue to serve and be persons for others, we will continue this work both at home and internationally.
