2008 Ordinations

Archbishop Alex J. Brunett, D.D., Ph.D. of Seattle will ordain four Jesuits to the priesthood on Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m. The Mass of Ordination will be at St. James Cathedral, 804 Ninth Ave., in Seattle. The public is invited to attend.

Rev. Mr. Charles T. Barnes, SJ, was born in 1961 in Los Angeles. He entered the Society of Jesus in August 1997 and professed first vows in August 1999. He did first studies at Loyola University in Chicago, earning a master’s degree in health care ethics. He then taught for three years at Seattle University before beginning his theology studies at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley in 2005. Prior to entering the Jesuits, Charles earned bachelor degrees in business administration and humanities/German at Seattle University and a master’s degree in health administration from Washington University in St. Louis. Raised in Puget Sound, Charles attended grade school at Sacred Heart in Bellevue, Washington and graduated from Seattle Preparatory School in 1978. A mass of thanksgiving will be celebrated by Fr. Barnes at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 22, at Sacred Heart Church in Bellevue. In the fall, Fr. Barnes will begin his new work as assistant to the Superior of the Regis Jesuit Community in Spokane, where he will serve senior Jesuits, and as a parochial minister at St. Aloysius Parish..
Rev. Mr. Paul H. Grubb, SJ, was born in 1972 in Eugene, Oregon. He entered the Society of Jesus in August 1998 and professed first vows in August 2000. After his first studies at Loyola University in Chicago, he spent his regency teaching at Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane. He then attended Regis University in Toronto, where he did his theology studies. Prior to entering the Society, Paul earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Gonzaga University in 1995. Raised in Oregon, Paul is a 1991 graduate of Jesuit High School in Portland Fr. Grubb will preside at a mass of thanksgiving on Sunday, June 22, at noon, at St. Hubert’s Church in Langley, Wash. In the fall, he will return to his alma mater, Jesuit High School, Portland, where he will teach and work in campus ministry.
Rev. Mr. Stephen J. Kieta, SJ, was born in 1968 in San Francisco. After earning a master’s degree in religious studies from Gonzaga University in 1997, he entered the Society of Jesus and professed his first vows in August 1999. His first studies were at Loyola University in Chicago where he earned master’s degrees in social philosophy and history. He spent regency teaching at Bellarmine Preparatory School in Tacoma and most recently has been studying theology at Heythrop College, University of London. He is a 1990 graduate of Santa Clara University with a bachelor’s degree in history and is a 1986 graduate of O’Dea High School in Seattle. Fr. Kieta will celebrate a mass of thanksgiving Sunday, June 22, at 11 a.m., in St. Aloysius Chapel at Bellarmine Preparatory School in Tacoma. In the fall he will begin his first assignment as a priest, teaching history and religion at Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane.
Rev. Mr. Thao Ngoc Nguyen, SJ, was born in 1966 in Vinh Hoa, Daklak, Vietnam. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1998 and professed first vows in 2000. His first studies were done at Bellarmine House of Studies in St. Louis, during which time he earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and letters from St. Louis University. He then worked at Seattle University for his regency. Prior to his time as a Jesuit, Thao earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Dalat University in Nhatrang, Vietnam in 1995. Fr. Nguyen will celebrate a mass of thanksgiving on Sunday, June 22, at 11:30 a.m., at Church of the Vietnamese Martyrs in Seattle. In the fall he will return to Berkeley to continue work on a doctorate in theology at the Graduate Theological Union.
